Established in April, 2021, The Centre for Disease Control and Research (CDCR), at the Federal Medical Centre Asaba, is a comprehensive facility dedicated to infectious disease management and public health initiatives.
Components of the CDCR
Infectious Disease Treatment Center (IDTC)
The IDTC also known as the Isolation Ward or Case Management Unit, provides specialized care for patients with infectious diseases such as Lassa-fever, COVID-19 and Monkeypox. With over 250 COVID-19 cases managed, the Center boasts 12 rooms, including 2 for suspected cases, 10 for confirmed cases and 2 ICU rooms.
Each room is equipped with en-suite facilities and connected to the nurses' and doctors' station via closed circuit television and intercom. A multidisciplinary team of experts, including public health and infectious disease specialists, provide patient care.
The Public Health Molecular Laboratory
This safety level 2- 3 laboratory is fully equipped for diagnosing viral infections like COVID-19, Yellow fever, Lassa fever etc. The laboratory also serves as a research facility for Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.
Infection Prevention and Control unit (IPC)
The IPC unit oversees infection prevention and control activities, develops hospital policies, conducts regular ward round, and performs IPC audits.
The Research Unit
The Research Unit actively promotes research activities within the center and its environs.
Management Structure
The CDCR is administratively managed by the hospital management and Medical Director of FMC Asaba through the Centre's
Director. Each unit is led by a designated unit head, ensuring effective operations and coordination.
