Common Isolates and Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of Urine Samples Among Patients Attending a Tertiary Health Institution in South South Nigeria<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

ABSTRACT<\/span><\/p>\n

Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a significant public health concern, with bacteria responsible for 95% of cases. <\/span><\/p>\n

Objective:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Identify main bacteria isolates and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in UTIs at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. <\/span><\/p>\n

Methodology: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Retrospective cross sectional study (2019-2022) reviewing laboratory records.<\/span><\/p>\n

Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. 2113 samples analyzed (683 males,1430 females), <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Predominant bacteria: Escherichia coli (41.9%) , Staphylococcus aureus(42.9%), klebsiella spp (11%).<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Female subjects had higher isolation rates (66.7%) than males (33.3%).<\/span><\/p>\n

4. High resistance rates observed against tested antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gram-negative bacteria, particularly E.coli, were the main cause of UTIs, with most isolates showing multidrug resistance and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase production.<\/span><\/p>\n

Profile of Antibiotics Prescription Pattern and their outcome in Patients during Covid 19 Treatment in a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria <\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

ABSTRACT<\/span><\/p>\n

The study evaluated antibiotic prescription patterns and treatment outcomes among hospitalized Covid 19 patients at the Centre for Disease Control an Research, Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria during the first and second wave of the pandemic. A retrospective review of 122 patient records examined demographic data, antibiotic use, dose regimen, hospitalizations length and commodities. The study aimed to determine antibiotic prescription patterns and treatment outcomes (primary outcomes) and identify factors predicting patient recovery (Secondary outcomes). Chi square analysis and Fisher’s test were utilized to obtain the primary outcomes and the secondary outcome was derived using regression analysis. A total of 299 antibiotics from 10 classes were prescribed with 98.4% of patients receiving azithromicin and penicillin\/macrolides Among the patients, 40 completed treatments at home. 53 had commodities, 19 died, 100 recovered. Poor treatment outcomes were linked to older age, commodities and multiple antibiotic combinations, while gender, hospitalizations length and Antibiotic type did not significantly impact recovery. No significant differences were found in antibiotic prescriptions between patients with and without bacterial co-infections. These findings highlight the role of compromised immunity in poor outcomes and underscore the importance of evidence based antibiotic use during outbreaks to enhance patient management and curb antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>\n

Escherichia coli and salmonella were the most frequently identified pathogens, with high resistance to fluoroquinolones and gentamycin. Evaluating the Effectiveness of Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT)Programs : A Case Study of Federal Medical Centre Asaba <\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

ABSTRACT<\/span><\/p>\n

Background :<\/strong> Mother to Child Transmission (MTCT) of HIV continues to be a critical public health issue, particularly in high-Prevalence regions. This study examines the rates of MTCT in relation to antenatal booking, parity, antiretroviral (ARV) use, delivery mode, CD4 counts, and infant feeding practices.<\/p>\n

Methods:<\/strong> A retrospective cross sectional study was conducted at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Nigeria, involving pregnant women living with HIV attending the prevention of mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Program. Data on demographics, antenatal booking. ARV use, delivery mode, CD4 count, and infant feeding were collected. Ethical approval was obtained from the hospital’s ethics committee. MTCT rates were analysed based on these variables.<\/p>\n

Results: MTCT rates dropped from 1.2% in 2018 to 0% in 2019, with ARV use showed lower MTCT rates were associated with CD4 counts below 200 cells\/mm^3, emphasizing the importance of early Art initiation. Exclusive breastfeeding with ARV prophylaxis was the most effective practice.<\/p>\n

Conclusion: <\/strong>The PMTCT program at FMC Asaba significantly reduced MTCT rates, highlighting the importance of early booking, ARV adherence, and appropriate delivery methods in improving maternal-child health in high HIV Prevalence areas.<\/p>\n

Pattern of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Federal Medical Centre Asaba: A five year retrospective study of Syphilis, Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia <\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

ABSTRACT<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim:<\/strong> To determine the patterns of STIs at Federal Medical Centre Asaba from 2019-2023 and how they relate to patients socio-demographic characteristics.<\/p>\n

Study Design & Setting:<\/strong> A 5 year retrospective review of medical records at FMC Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, covering 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2023. STIs examined were syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.<\/p>\n

Key Results:<\/strong> 89 patiens total: Demographics: Male predominance with 62 males (69.7%) vs 27 females (30.3%), a 2.8:1 ratio that fluctuated yearly. Mean age was 32.3 years for males and 38 years for females.<\/p>\n

STI Pattern: Syphillis was most common at 71 cases (79.8%) , followed by gonorrhea at 12 cases (13.5%). There was 1 case each (1.1%) of genital warts and mixed syphilis + chlamydia infection. Four cases (4.5%) were HIV-positive with concurrent syphilis.<\/p>\n

Conclusion: <\/strong>The study found a decrease in STI patients at the facility compared to previous years. This could reflect either a true decline in STI prevalence, or reduced testing due to limited resources. The authors suggest improved access to other diagnostic\/treatment centers may also explain fewer patients presenting at FMC Asaba.<\/p>\n

Helicobacter Pylori Infection among Patients seen at Federal Medical Centre Asaba, Delta State: A Comparison of Serological and Faecal Antigen Testing Methods<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

ABSTRACT<\/span><\/p>\n

Background<\/strong> : Helicobacter Pylori is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium that has been established as the primary aetiological agent responsible for chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. <\/p>\n

Aim: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of serological testing with faecal antigen testing for the diagnosis of <\/p>\n

H. pylori infection in subjects attending Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. Accurate diagnosis of infection is important for effective <\/p>\n

management and control. <\/p>\n

Methodology:<\/strong> A comparison of the performance of two diagnostic test methods, serology and stool antigen testing, for <\/p>\n

Helicobacter pylori infection was conducted among 397 patients using a prospective cross-sectional study design. Blood and fresh <\/p>\n

stool samples were collected from eligible patients after consent. Serum samples were tested for H. pylori antibodies using a <\/p>\n

serological method, whereas stool samples were tested for H. pylori antigen. The stool antigen method was used as the reference <\/p>\n

method for assessing the diagnostic performance of serology. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive <\/p>\n

value, and the level of agreement between the two methods were also analysed. <\/p>\n

Results:<\/strong> The age distribution of participants was similar across genders, with a mean age of approximately 38 years. Serology and <\/p>\n

stool antigen testing showed similar positivity rates of 43.07% and 42.57%, respectively. Using stool antigen testing as the reference <\/p>\n

method, the serological test showed a sensitivity of 93.5% and specificity of 94.3%, with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 92.4% <\/p>\n

and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 95.1%. However, Cohen’s kappa analysis showed 0.877 (95% CI:0.83-0.92) indicating <\/p>\n

almost perfect agreement. <\/p>\n

Conclusion:<\/strong> The study demonstrated that the serological method showed high diagnostic performance compared with stool antigen <\/p>\n

testing and may be useful as a screening method for H. pylori infection when the serology result is negative. However, stool antigen <\/p>\n

testing remains useful for confirming active infection because it detects active infection rather than past exposure.<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim:<\/strong> To evaluate the level of awareness, risk factors, and prevalence of viral hepatitis B and C among antenatal attendees at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. <\/p>\n

Place and Duration of Study: Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, from June to October 2025. <\/p>\n

Methodology: <\/strong>This hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study involved 145 pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, from June to October 2025. Ethical approval was obtained before the commencement of the study, and informed consent was secured from all participants prior to enrolment. Data on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, level of awareness, knowledge, and possible risk factors associated with hepatitis B and C infection were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire. Approximately 3 mL of venous blood was collected aseptically from each participant and analysed for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C virus antibodies using standard rapid diagnostic test kits. The data obtained were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics, with both descriptive and inferential statistical methods applied. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. <\/p>\n

Results: <\/strong>Of the 145 pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinic, most were between 21 and 30 years old (72.4%), and almost all were married (96.6%). Awareness of hepatitis B was relatively high, with about three-quarters of participants having heard of it (75.2%), while awareness of hepatitis C was lower (58.6%). Overall, participants demonstrated a moderate understanding of how these infections are transmitted (52.4%). Healthcare professionals were the most commonly reported source of information on viral hepatitis (46.9%). <\/p>\n

Although a large proportion of the women acknowledged the importance of hepatitis B vaccination (77.9%), only a small number had received the vaccine (13.1%). Screening results showed that 2.8% of the participants tested positive for hepatitis B, while none tested positive for hepatitis C. <\/p>\n

Conclusion:<\/strong> The findings indicate that although awareness of viral hepatitis among pregnant women was <\/p>\n

fairly encouraging, the low uptake of hepatitis B vaccination remains a major concern. This highlights the <\/p>\n

need for stronger health education during antenatal visits, regular screening, and improved preventive <\/p>\n
