The Department of Surgery is one of the pioneer clinical departments in the hospital. It initially started with part-time consultants. The department has witnessed phenomenal evolution in its human capital and infrastructural development. At present, there are fifteen full-time consultants, alongside adjunct consultants, senior registrars, registrars, and house officers. There is a training of residents for Part 1 General Surgery and Part 2 (Final) Fellowship in General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery and Urology. The department is also involved in the training of house-officers as a prerequisite for full registration by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

There is a stratification of the department into units with a view to achieving the hospital’s three-prong agenda; Service, Research, and Training. The units are;

The unit coordinates the training activities in the department inclusive of observership by the medical students, training of house officers, and residency training.  The department of surgery trains residents for Part 1 surgery examination and Part 2 Final (Fellowship) in General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Urology examinations of the West African College of Surgeons. There is also training of residents from other departments and other hospitals. The department has produced senior registrars and consultants. There are continuous research activities in the department. Several articles have been published by the members of the department at both local and international journals.
