World Hand Hygiene Day started as a global campaign by WHO in 2009 with the theme; “Save lives: Clean Your Hands”. Now this campaign is celebrated annually on May 5.

This year’s theme marked by WHO has been tagged “Unite for Safety: Clean your hands”, which focuses on encouraging people to clean their hands at the right times, with the right product, that will lead to high quality safer care everywhere. WHO calls upon people at all levels to work together to create an environment where clean hands knowledge and behavior become a part of the culture at the point of care among healthcare workers, even within health care organization.

Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, joined this campaign with a Rally/walk round the hospital and environment for resensitization on the importance of practicing safe hand hygiene. The Medical Director, Dr Victor Osaituma reminded heads of departments and healthcare workers on the importance of this simple act. He added that good hand hygiene is relatively cheap and a cornerstone of safe and effective health care, stating that there are so many diseases this simple practice can prevent and not just Covid-19.
