OVERVIEW  

The Pharmacy department of Federal Medical Center Asaba has always strived for innovation and advancement. Since the upgrade of the hospital from a state general hospital to a Federal Medical Center in 1998, the department has grown from only one unit to more than 10 specialized units.  Our mission still remains strict dedication to providing prompt, effective and efficient Pharmaceutical Care services to our clients through the mobilization and motivation of highly trained and dedicated workforce in line with best practices. 


ABOUT US 

Since the creation of Federal Medical Center Asaba, the Pharmacy department has always being an integral part of the clinical services offered at the center. We offer services covering various Pharmaceutical care areas as listed below;

  • Procurement of safe, effective, affordable and efficacious medicines and medical equipment through the drug revolving funds. 
  • Assessment of prescription.  
  • Identification and resolution of medication/ therapy issues. 
  • Dispensing and counselling of patients on proper and rational use of drugs.
  • Logistics management and inventory control of all medicine and consumables.
  • Quality control and quality assurance of all medicine and consumable
  • Extemporaneous dosage preparations.
  • Training of Pharmacy students and interns.
  • Provisions of medicine information service to the clinical and non-clinical community.
  • Research and development.
  • Provision of specialized services in;  a) Public health pharmacy   b) Maternal and Obstetrics and Gynecology units. 

MEET OUR TEAM

Our Pharmacists are a group of highly skilled, and experienced professionals and are drawn from top Pharmacy schools, residencies and fellowship programs around Nigeria and other parts of the World.   The team is made of 45 Pharmacists, in addition to intern Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, scientific officers and other support staff and at the helm of affair is the Director, Pharmaceutical services, a position currently held by Pharmacist (Dr.) Christopher Akamuagwuna Ujomu B.pharm, PharmD, FPCPharm (Clin.).

The department has 13 Pharmacy subunits. 


STRUCTURAL ORGANIZATION 
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT :
Co-ordinates and manages all aspects of pharmaceutical services in the centers. 
Supervises procurement, drug revolving fund, DRF store/ logistics.   Head of Clinical services (Consultant, Public health Pharmacy)   ✓ Supervises activities in all the clinical units of the department

Specially oversees the following units:

  • Public health Pharmacist unit.
  • Theatre pharmacy unit.
  • Intensive care pharmacy unit.
  •  Accident and emergency/ trauma unit.
  • Medicine information center / Pharmacovigilance

All units and division report vertically in ascending order to the Head of department. Some of our units operate for 24hours like; 

  • Accident and emergency unit.
  • Impatient pharmacy units.
  • NHIS pharmacy unit.
  • Theatre / ICU Pharmacy unit.


RESEARCH

 

The department has started and concluded several researches, some of which has been published. We also have various research ongoing.
