HISTORY
Anaesthesia service is as old as the Federal Medical Center Asaba, a 457 bedded hospital . This service was initially been delivered by Nurse Anaesthetist under the supervision of the operating consultant surgeon. In 2008, with the return of the pioneer HOD from residency training in UBTH, A full-fledged Department of Anaesthesia was established comprising of physician anaesthetist, nurse anaesthetist and technicians all working together to provide safe anaesthesia service in the hospital. The department was accredited to train resident doctors in Anaesthesia in 2018 and currently has full accreditation from the National Postgraduate Medical college of Nigeria and Partial accreditation from west African college of surgeons for the training of resident doctors.

The department is accredited for training of resident doctors by both National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (full accreditation) and West African College of Surgeons (partial accreditation).
Staff composition include, medical doctors (consultants and residents), nurses (critical care nurse, nurse anaesthetists and general duty nurses) and Anaesthetic Technicians.
Anaesthesia Department has six (6) bedded well equipped intensive care unit (ICU) and six (6) bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with solar powered inverter for adequate power supply, 24hour a day and seven days a week.
There is a dedicated emergency theatre suite that provides 24/7 anaesthesia care for emergency surgery.
There are two suites dedicated for elective and emergency obstetric surgery, and another suite dedicated for ophthalmic surgeries.
There are five theatre suites dedicated for elective surgeries. These include neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, orthopaedic, gynaecological, urology, plastic surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, general surgery, and Paediatric surgery.
