The center for communicable disease control and research was commissioned in April 2021

To work as a team towards the provision of prompt response and efficient services on communicable diseases control and research through consistent and progressive capacity building, and the institution of evidence based research.

The center is made up of the following:

1.       The infectious disease treatment center ( Isolation ward or Case Management Unit)

This is where infectious diseases like Lassa fever, COVID-19, Monkey-pox and other communicable diseases are treated. Over 250 covid-19 cases has been managed at the treatment center.

It’s the only purposely built infectious disease treatment center in Delta State, and one of the best in Nigeria. The center houses 12 rooms, two rooms for suspected cases and 10 rooms for confirmed cases and two ICU rooms. The center is built such that each room is en-suite and connected to the nurses and doctors bay by closed circuit television and intercom.


The treatment center, is run by well trained public health and infectious disease experts.


Patient management at the center is done by a multi-disciplinary team of experts.


2.       The Public Health Molecular Laboratory

This is a safety level 2- 3 laboratory fully equipped for the diagnosis of viral infections like COVID-19, Yellow fever, Lassa fever etc. The laboratory also doubles as a research laboratory in Federal medical center, Asaba


3.       Infection Prevention and Control unit (IPC)

This oversees all the IPC activities in FMC Asaba. This includes the development of the hospital IPC policy, regular IPC ward rounds and IPC audits.


4.       The Research Unit

This unit is actively driving research activities in FMC and environs.


The CCDCR is managed administratively by the management and Medical Director of FMC Asaba through the center director, while each unit in the center is managed by a unit head.
