*FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ASABA COMMENCES THREE-DAY EBOLA PREPAREDNESS TRAINING FOR HER HEALTHCARE WORKERS*

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and safeguard public health, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, today commenced a three-day Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Preparedness Training for healthcare workers at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Building of the hospital. The training, which runs from Monday, June 8 to Wednesday, June 10, 2026, is designed to enhance the capacity of healthcare personnel to effectively identify, manage, and respond to potential Ebola Virus Disease cases in line with national and international best practices. The opening remarks were delivered by the Chairman of the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. James Ibuaku, who represented the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ekeneam Omo. In his address, he emphasized the importance of preparedness, vigilance, and strict adherence to infection prevention and control protocols in protecting patients, healthcare workers, and the wider community from emerging infectious diseases. Also present at the training were the Director of Administration, Mr. Patrick Onoye; the Deputy Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Anita Ekwere; Public Health Consultants; the Hospital Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer; the Delta State Infection Prevention and Control Officer; and members of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Team. The training combines theoretical sessions with practical demonstrations and simulation exercises aimed at improving readiness and response coordination during public health emergencies. Key topics covered include: • Overview of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) • Screening, triaging, notification, patient placement, and movement • Environmental cleaning and waste management • Safe burial practices • Hand hygiene and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Practical scenarios and response simulations Notably, the training is being conducted concurrently at the Mother and Child Hospital, Warri Annex, via livestream, further reinforcing efforts to strengthen Ebola preparedness and response capacity across healthcare facilities. Through initiatives such as this, FMC Asaba continues to demonstrate its commitment to patient safety, the protection of healthcare workers, and the delivery of quality healthcare services while maintaining readiness to respond to emerging public health threats.
