Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State, has emerged as the 1st Place Winner of the 2026 WASPEN Malnutrition Awareness Week Institutional Excellence Award (MAW-IEA), recording an outstanding average score of 94.75/100. This places the Institution as the overall winner among participating institutions nationwide.
The award, organised by the West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, recognises institutions demonstrating excellence in the prevention, identification and management of malnutrition through clinical nutrition care and community-based interventions.
The 2026 Malnutrition Awareness Week was held from 21–25 September 2026, bringing together institutions committed to strengthening nutrition care and improving outcomes for individuals and communities affected by malnutrition.

A total of 18 institutions from 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) participated in the Institutional Excellence Award, while 8 institutions submitted their complete entry packs for assessment.
Entries were evaluated by a multidisciplinary panel comprising professionals from Dietetics, Pharmacy, Nutrition and WASPEN, with FMC Asaba emerging top of the final ranking with scores of 95, 87, 99 and 98 from the four judges.
This remarkable recognition reflects the commitment, teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration of the FMC Asaba WASPEN team in advancing evidence-based nutrition care, strengthening malnutrition screening and management, and improving patient and community outcomes.
