Federal Medical Centre Asaba joins the global community in commemorating World Rare Disease Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about rare diseases and the challenges faced by individuals and families living with them.
A rare disease is a condition that affects a small percentage of the population. While each disease may be uncommon, there are over 7,000 identified rare diseases worldwide, collectively affecting millions of people. Many are genetic, chronic, and may require lifelong care.
Examples include Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, Hemophilia, certain metabolic disorders, rare childhood cancers, and complex congenital conditions. Some severe variants of Sickle Cell Disease and neonatal disorders also require highly specialized management.
At FMC Asaba, we encounter patients with rare and complex medical conditions across our Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and specialized clinics. Through early diagnosis, multidisciplinary collaboration, neonatal care support, and dedicated clinical expertise, we continue to provide compassionate and patient-centered care to affected individuals and families.
We recognise that living with a rare disease can involve emotional, financial, and social challenges. That is why awareness, timely intervention, and community support remain essential.
On this World Rare Disease Day, FMC Asaba stands in solidarity with patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals working tirelessly to improve outcomes and expand access to care.
Every patient matters. No condition is too rare to deserve attention.
