World Glaucoma Week 2026: Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World

The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (Delta State) joins the global community to commemorate World Glaucoma Week 2026, a dedicated awareness campaign aimed at educating the public about glaucoma and the importance of early eye examinations. This year’s theme, “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” emphasizes collective action in the fight against one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because it can develop gradually without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. If left undetected and untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent blindness. However, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce the risk of vision loss. As part of activities to mark World Glaucoma Week, free glaucoma screening will be available in all ophthalmology clinics across Delta State from March 8th to March 14th, 2026. The screening program is designed to encourage individuals to check their eye health and identify potential eye conditions before they become severe. Eye health professionals are encouraging everyone—especially individuals above 40 years, those with a family history of glaucoma, and people experiencing vision changes—to take advantage of this opportunity to undergo a comprehensive eye examination. Protecting your vision begins with awareness and action. Regular eye checks are essential for maintaining healthy sight and preventing avoidable blindness. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
